Evolve — Mobile App Design

Mobile App Design

App design that keeps users coming back — screens built for thumbs, small screens and short attention spans, ready for iOS and Android from day one.

Where apps fail

Most apps fail in the first five minutes.

Usually not on the idea. On onboarding, cramped layouts, or never getting the idea onto a screen at all.

01 — Challenge

Installs that never open twice

Users download the app and never open it a second time. Onboarding loses them before the first key action, and your reviews mention “confusing” more than any feature. Most apps don’t fail on the idea — they fail in the first five minutes.

02 — Challenge

Your website, squeezed onto a phone

The app is the web design shrunk to fit — tiny targets, buried actions and patterns that feel foreign on both iOS and Android. Users notice immediately when an app ignores the conventions they already know by heart.

03 — Challenge

An app idea with nothing to show

You have a real idea for an app, but nothing visual yet — no screens to test, nothing to show investors and no spec a developer can quote against. Words alone keep getting the idea pictured wrong.

Platforms

Designed for each platform, in one design language.

Your brand stays consistent everywhere, while navigation, gestures and controls follow the conventions iPhone and Android users already know by heart.

01iOSFeels at home on an iPhone
What we design for

Apple’s conventions for navigation, gestures and controls, Dynamic Type for people who enlarge text, and VoiceOver basics considered from the first screen.

Where it differs

Tab bars, swipe-back navigation, sheets and pickers follow iOS patterns, while colors, type and components stay shared with the Android design.

02AndroidNot an iPhone port
What we design for

Android’s conventions for navigation, system back behavior and controls, scalable text and TalkBack basics, across the wide range of Android screen sizes.

Where it differs

System back, navigation placement and control styles follow what Android users expect, so the app never feels like it was designed for another phone.

03Cross-platform (React Native / Flutter)One codebase, two apps that feel native
What we design for

What React Native and Flutter render well, so the animations, transitions and components you approve are practical to ship on both platforms.

What it means for you

One component library shared across iOS and Android, so screens stay consistent as the app grows and new features reuse proven pieces.

Who builds it

We can build it ourselves, or hand your developers organized files, specs and assets with the same designers on call during the build.

04App Store & Play launch prepThe design side of getting listed
What we prepare
  • App icon designed and exported for both stores
  • Store screenshots built from the final screens
  • Permission screens that explain why access is needed
Why it matters

The icon and screenshots are the first design most people see, in the store listing, before they ever decide to install.

Principles

What every screen is designed around.

Six principles applied from the first wireframe, so the app feels quick, clear and native in the hand.

  1. 01

    Thumb-first layouts

Primary actions where thumbs actually reach, with touch targets sized for fingers, not cursors. Every screen is designed for one-handed use first.

  2. 02

    Platform-native patterns

iOS and Android conventions respected within one design language — navigation, gestures and controls that feel at home on each platform.

  3. 03

    Focused onboarding

First sessions designed to reach real value fast — fewer screens between install and the moment your app earns its spot on the home screen.

  4. 04

    Offline & edge states

Bad signal, empty lists, failed requests — we design those moments too, so the app stays understandable when conditions aren’t perfect.

  5. 05

    Performance-aware design

Assets, animations and transitions specified with the frame budget in mind, so the design makes the app feel quick instead of weighing it down.

  6. 06

    Accessibility built in

Dynamic type, sufficient contrast, and VoiceOver and TalkBack basics considered from the first screen — not retrofitted after launch.

Timeline

A typical schedule, from deep-dive to handoff.

Durations scale with the number of screens and flows. A focused app with a handful of core screens moves faster.

  1. 01

    Week 1

    Product & user deep-dive

Who your users are, what job the app does for them, and the one action every other screen should serve.

  2. 02

    Weeks 2–3

    Flows & wireframes

Every path through the app mapped in user flows and low-fidelity wireframes, so structure is settled before pixels get polished.

  3. 03

    Weeks 4–5

    Visual direction & screens

A direction grounded in your brand, then every screen in every state — loading, empty, error and success — for iOS and Android.

  4. 04

    Week 6

    Prototype & test on device

Interactive prototypes tested on real phones with real users, so confusing parts get fixed while changes still cost minutes.

  5. 05

    Weeks 7–8

    Handoff & build support

Organized files, specs and assets for your developers, with the same designers on call while the app gets built.

FAQ

Platforms, prototypes and building the app.

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly.

01Do you design for both iOS and Android?

Yes — every project covers both. We work in one design language so the app feels like your brand everywhere, while respecting each platform’s conventions for navigation, gestures and controls. iPhone and Android users each get an app that feels native, not a compromise built for neither.

02How long does mobile app design take?

It scales with the number of screens and the complexity of the flows between them. A focused app with a handful of core screens moves quickly; a product with many roles and states takes longer. Most projects launch in 4–10 weeks, and we agree on a timeline before work starts.

03Do you also build the app?

We can. Our designs are made for real implementation in React Native or Flutter, so nothing you approve turns out to be unbuildable. We can carry the project through development ourselves, or hand your team organized files, specs and assets — with the same designers on call while they build.

04Can you redesign an existing app?

Yes. We start with an audit of what’s working and what isn’t — real usage patterns, not guesses — then ship improvements in phases so current users aren’t hit with a jarring overnight change. Our Product Redesign service covers exactly this.

05Will I see the design on a real phone before development?

Always. We build clickable prototypes you can tap through on your own phone, and we test them on-device with real users before development starts. Screens that look great on a monitor can fail in the hand, so we never ask you to approve one without holding it.

06How much does app design cost?

Every app is scoped individually — screen count, platforms and states, and whether prototyping and user testing are included drive the budget more than anything else. Share a rough budget range on our contact form and we’ll come back within 24 hours with a scoped estimate.
